Student Session Choices 

Session One

Meet and greet other students attending.

Advocacy project– Brainstorm strengths, interests, weaknesses and other information that teachers need to know all about you! Let teachers know who you really are and what helps you learn through this brainstorming exercise.

Session Two

Build with technology my advocacy project- facilitated by ICATER. Through the use of the technology presented in the earlier session of What’s new in technology?, ICATER will guide the students to build their advocacy projects in a digital format. If there is time, students will participate in a mock share of their projects.

Session Three

2e and what that means for you, presented by the Belin- Blank Center. A student session explaining what it means to be twice exceptional, the benefits and challenges of 2e, and a different perspective on having learning differences.

Adult Session Choices 

Session One

Advocacy project (recommended for parents to work with their student):brainstorm strengths, interests, weaknesses and other information that teachers need to know all about you! Work with your student to help teachers know who your child really is and what helps he/she learn through this brainstorming exercise. 

The science behind reading, presented by Deborah Reed, Ph.D of the Iowa Reading Research Center (recommended for educators): a presentation on the science of reading,  explaining what we know from research and brain imaging studies about what it takes to read.

IEP vs. 504 (recommended for parents and educators): an informational session discussing the major components of IEP and 504 plans, the differences, and which fits best for students with learning difficulties.

Session Two

Parents round table with Family Education Partnership (FEP), presented by Sara Kane, FEP Parent Partner of Grant Wood AEA (recommended for parents): Come with your questions for this round table discussion.

A follow-up to St. George’s, presented by Chuck Peters (recommended for parents and educators): a follow-up to the video shown at lunch. Chuck will provide an update on his quest to find what has made this school successful.

Session Three

Teaching Mathematics for Understanding for Advanced and Struggling Learners, presented by Terry Schneekloth (recommended for educators): High school teacher, Terry Schneekloth, will present strategies and teaching tools used to meet both advanced and struggling learners in the math classroom. High school educators are the intended audience.

Dyslexia, the Brain, and Student Social-Emotional Functioning, presented by Dr. McCoy, Pediatric Neuropsychologist at Iowa City Psychology (recommended for parents): Dr. McCoy is a Pediatric Neuropsychologist with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa. After completing an Accredited Internship in Pediatric Psychology and Pediatric Neuropsychology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, she completed 3 years of post-doctoral training in Pediatric Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Iowa. She has been providing clinical services to children, adolescents, and young adults in Eastern Iowa since 2010. She currently co-owns and practices at Iowa City Psychology, where she performs neuropsychological and psychological assessment, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. She enjoys working with a variety of presenting issues, including learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, anxiety, and depression. As a Pediatric Neuropsychologist, she pays special attention to brain-behavior relationships and applies this knowledge to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

What is new in technology? presented by ICATER (recommended for educators): The Iowa Center for Assistive Technology Education and Research is back for an update on what is new in assistive technology and how to help our students. Come interact and learn with this hands-on presentation.
